I SAT ON THE FLOOR for a long time. When Callie didn’t reappear, I got up and made my way back to the dorm. I thought about waking Zo, but I wanted to talk to Callie before I brought another person into this. More than anything else, I wanted to know she was okay.

I could have gone looking for her, but where would I start? Besides, I had a feeling the rune lines were going to be difficult for me to cross now, even if I didn’t have bracelets. Miss Trager had made it pretty clear she wanted me dead, so there was no way she was going to let me go wandering the school freely.

I lay awake listening to the others breathing. Elijah had a tendency to snore, and Zo sometimes let off sparks from her dreams, but otherwise it was usually pretty quiet in the dorm. Tonight, I was hearing every little creak and shuffle, wondering if it was Callie coming back, or worse, Miss Trager coming to “remove” me.

Finally, the dorm room door creaked open. Light flooded in from the corridor, but the others didn’t wake. I froze, listening to the hushed voices outside the room, then Callie slipped inside.

I could see the silhouette of one of the teachers outside the door, so I didn’t move, pretending to be asleep. Callie climbed into the bed below me, and the door closed, leaving us in darkness again.

I’d been desperate to talk to her, but now she was here, I felt nervous. Would she blame me for what happened? I still wasn’t sure what had happened, let alone why.

“Toby?”

I let out a breath at her whisper. “Yeah, I’m awake.”

I hung my head over the side of the bunk. She was sitting on her mattress, the blanket wrapped loosely around her. She looked really small in the middle of that space. The pyjamas she was wearing were too big for her, like half of the clothes they’d given her. Suddenly, it made sense why she’d arrived here with nothing but that book.

She bit her lip. “Can I come up?”

I’m embarrassed to admit, I blushed. This was not exactly what I pictured as the first time I had a girl in my bed. I nodded, awkwardly, and moved over to the wall. There was a rustling, then I heard her climbing up the ladder.

She brought the blanket with her, wearing it like a cape. She sat down cross-legged and wrapped it around herself.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I had no idea–”

She shook her head, brushing away the apology. “I couldn’t let Miss Trager do that to you. I knew the headmaster would be called if I crossed the line. It seemed the simplest way to...” She shrugged.

The simplest way to stop them killing me. I reached out, touching her arm. “Thank you.” I held her eye, wanting her to know exactly how seriously I meant that. She had quite literally saved my life.

She nodded, and I felt she did know. Just like when we’d talked earlier and I knew what she wanted to ask me, it felt like we were in sync.
